But, doesn't the Onstar in dash phone need to be programmed with the numbers you want to call in advance? The entire system works via voice tags? Correct? Once you place a call to a party, how do you navigate through the switchboard or extension list, or whatever menu the place you are calling has? Without a keypay,it appears to me that you are doing the funky chicken,so to speak. Loking at the cost of portable cellular phone plans from the major providers,it appears that the cost of making calls via Onstar is about the most expensive way to go. Also, chances are you also own and carry a portable phone anyway. What do you do if someone calls you while you are in the car? Solution? Forget Onstar, and use the Saab integrated phone connection that can be installed in any 9-5 and made to be fully functional with moost major brands of phones like Nokia, Motorola,Samsung etc. You take the same call you are on while driving and can carry it away from the car with no interruption, and you can of course do the reverse as well.
As forthe directional ability of the Onstar reps, keep in mind that the directions you get are only as good as the ability of the person on the other end of the phone to communicate with you.Every time you call them, you get someone new to you,who has to try to understand where you are and where you want to go. Language becomes a barrier for not only you, but the person inthe Onstar center trying to help you. I tried it twice during my free year with them on my 2002 Aero. They could not find their way out of a paper bag. If it were available from Saab in an integrated fashion( ie, no dash top add ons for me)I would take a moving map display of my present position and where I want to go, any day over the way Onstar is set up to work
