1999-2009 [Subscribe to Daily Digest] |
Now that I've had my 2000 9-5 SE V6 since Monday, I can make the following observation when comparing it to the 1999 Viggen that I traded for it:
What the 9-5 lacks in the sheer adrenaline rush that the Viggen can give you, it more than makes up for in refinement, elegance, luxuary.
Where the Viggen felt as if it rode on the bare wheels and not any tires between it and the road, the 9-5 is buttery smooth. Of course the 9-5 will not hang with the Viggen in the curvey's and will reach it's limitation way before the Viggen would. I drove the Viggen about 425 miles to trade with someone and I can definately say that I felt every bump on the way, and forgot about them on the way back while driving the 9-5. An owner of a 1999 Lexus LS400 owner rode with me both ways and really liked the ride and quietness of the 9-5.
The quietness of the 9-5 is so great: I have never owned a car on which I couldn't hear excessive amounts of tire noise. I hear very little (if any) in the 9-5 (maybe attributed to the Michelins?). Much quieter than my wife's Infiniti.
I do like the power of the V6. Very hot off the line in sport mode. I would say it would get the Viggen (for a short way) in first and second. Though by third gear, the Viggen would be pulling away.
The interior of the 9-5 is of course much more roomy (mainly in width and rear seat leg room). I thought the materials to be basically on the inside, though I like the taller console on the 9-5 to the low one on the Viggen.
And what can I say about the trick ventilated seats, cupholder, one touch sunroof, heater that stays on when the car is off, rear heated seat, and the 200 watt HK system is much nicer than the Viggen's (reminds me exactly of the 200 watt Bose system that I was used to in the 1999 Maxima SE that I previously owned)
The major thing that the Viggen had over the 9-5 SE is the looks and the Lightning Blue Metallic paint. I got so many comments, looks, thumbs ups, nods, etc when in the Viggen. Also, the wheels were sharper. Somehow I feel that even though I'm still in a Saab, I don't quite stand out as much as I did in the Viggen.
Love the 9-5!. Miss the Viggen, but I think I'll get over it (heck, probably already over it...Viggen who?)
