I turned in my '00 SE sedan in October after the 3 yr lease ended. I went thru some of the same stuff you're going thru now.
Based on comments here I feel that negotiating the buyout with SFSC is very difficult but not impossible. For me they were willing to drop the buyout approx. $1200, bring the price to $20,500ish. Not nearly good enough for me as my car had a wholesale value of about $15,000. But some folks here have worked deals to their satisfaction so I guess my advice is to determine what your bottom line is and your willingness to be flexible in order to keep your car.
Sounds like you've had most of the common V6 maladies fixed so I'm sure the future with your 2001 will be better. Your repair history is a "pro" because you know it.
I don't the exact reason Saab discontinued the V6 but its been discussed here before and someone may have posted accurate info about it. Regardless, the 4 cyl is a very good engine with its flaws known. The new 4 cyl Arc will ride, drive, and handle differently but not significantly so. Less torque off the line, more "peaky" feeling engine, lighter steering feel, stuff like that. Those aren't bad things, only different.
Saab overhauled the 9-5 in 2002 so, yeah, the new models will be different than your 2001. Transmission replacement has no bearing on the buyout price. And I don't think SFSC can get away with bumping your lease end fees just for the heck of it.
Looking at my itemized charges for lease end wear and tear, I got charged for excess wear charge ($325 for cracked windshield), $350 disposition fee, $40 tax on disposition fee, and a security deposit refund of $475, bringing my total due SFSC to $240. I'm sure yours will go similarly. Good luck to ya.
