9-5 PROBLEM: Wagon studder/hesitation???

Wife's got a '99 2.3t 5spd with 85k miles.
The last couple of days the car gives a sudden (and very noticeable - it almost feels like a sudden semi-heavy jab of the brakes... enough to make your body jerk forward) hesitation in almost any gear at any speed. Today, while driving with her, it did it to me at least 5 times randomly (sometime at slow speed, sometime at highway). It's quick/sudden and back to normal. Hasn't happened one after another... yet. It has happened with throttle AND without while I was coasting to stop. The worse part was when we had to stop and turn the motor off... it wouldn't want to restart! It took about 10 tries and heavy cranking before it fired up.
Facts:
1) I changed the fuel filter ~5 months ago.
2) This is the second tank of gas (different stations) with the problem.
3) Frequency is increasing.
4) I changed battery last year, when original died.
5) Voltmeter shows 12V battery and solid 14V alternator with power on (fluctuations are insignificant with AC, radio, lights, etc on).
6) I changed plugs last year.
Is this my fuel pump? Direct Ignition cassette? Alternator? I can't imagine this having anything to do with clutch or trans, right?
THanks
