If you're serious about burning CDs, invest in a Plextor drive, or even any other with BURNPROOF technology. TDK and iomega both make rebadged versions of the Plextors. Never a coaster, never a skip!
If you're serious about burning music to CDR, then forget MP3 (a lossy compression) and step up to SHN format. It is compressed WAV files in a lossless method. http://www.etree.org can tell you all about it.
You shouldn't need to use CDRWs, as CDRs are dirt cheap and should be even if the proposed price increases happen. I'm not sure where that issue stands.
The CDRW/CDR playing in some units and not others is simply that the technology isn't always backwards compatable. You'll have better luck with CDR than CDRW, and better luck with a new player than an older one.
But I think you were joking about the music industry conspiracy and Saab. When did Saab ever conform :)
