This is a DIY if you have patience and plenty of time. Estimate a half day, then triple it.

Access to the turbo is from the front of the car. Things are easier if you can put the car up on ramps and remove the bottom plastic underbelly panel.

Drain the radiator (the turbo is water cooled) and drain the oil (it is lubricated). Then, basically you are removing hoses and then the turbo unit itself.

Be sure to use *new* washers when reattaching the plumbing to the turbo... using the old washers is foolish and will cause leaks in the future. Life is easier if you remove the radiator fan. Another hint is to place a piece of cardboard between the radiator and the turbo. This prevents an errant wrench from hitting the delicate radiator.

The hardest thing I found was the removal of bolts/nuts that attach the turbo to the exhaust manifold. I found that these bolts/nuts tend to snap if you put too much torque on them. They seem to get brittle due to the extreme stresses they face. If you can spare the downtime, soak all the connections and the studs with a penetrant (like WD40). This makes them easier to remove.

There are turbo rebuild outfits that provide units at less cost than a new unit from Saab. There should be a site sponsor or two who can obtain a rebuilt turbo for you. The Garrett turbo is pretty common.

Bottom line is that you can do the job. It is actually one of the easier jobs on a Saab. Just take your time. Four beers should do it.
