Unwise to disconnect DRL's?

On the topic of whether or not it's stupid to disable the Daytime Running Lights (DRLs):
I really wish I had the reference for this, but I do not (sorry).
1. DRLs have proven utility only at *very* high latitudes, where the sun is very low in the sky. In those circumstances, people can have a hard time seeing oncoming traffic, as the sun blinds them. Thus, DRLs make sense in *some* (but not all) of Canada and Scandinavia (and I guess the top of Alaska, Russia and China too).
2. There is *no evidence whatsoever* that DRLs have any impact on accident frequency or severity in any other environment.
3. The reason that there's been a big push towards DRLs is simply because, after Canada mandated them, GM decided it would be *cheaper* to build all its North American cars with DRLs (rather then hassle with differences between US and Canadian models). This was the motivation for them to take away customer choice and install them on all cars as a "safety" feature. (The "safety" was mainly for GM profits.)
4. Please note that DRLs were not pushed by safety leaders like the Swedes and Mercedes. They were pushed by GM for the benefit of GM (what else is new?). Note that safety leader Saab began using DRLs *only* after GM took over. As long as Saab was at least half-owned by the Swedes, DRLs were *not* forced on us.
So you may wish to think twice before you accept GM's DRL hype.
