Challenge your assertion that DRL's are only viable in "extreme" latitudes. The sun can blind you at any latitude - just need the right time of day close to sunrise or sunset. Frequent report on the DC traffic reports is "traffic slow on I66 due to sun in the drivers' eyes". If you research further, you will find some roads in the USA even reqiure headlights on to make your car more visisble to others. And check the result for motorbikes having lights on - in most countries. The statistics show a reduction in accidents for them.
In sum, I believe it works for your safety to use the DRL's. You can't see them on your car so why worry about them being on?
