Why so good? Buyout price 2001 9-5- what's going on?

Hi All- I'm being offered a seemingly good price with no negotiating, something must be going on, makes me think I need to ask for MORE. I need your ideas.
We have always bought our cars outright, but thanks to this forum, I calculated it was FAR better of a deal to lease our 2001 Saab 9-5 4d, and we did- now we plan to buy it ( I covet a hybrid of my exact car some day, I don't want to buy another new non-hybrid- am I dreaming????). Now my newbie-ness of leasing rears its head again. Our residual was $17,060. The dealer just told me he could "do it" for $16,000 flat, plus license and tax. WHY? All he knows is the car has 27K on it (we're under our mileage, we did the 12,000/yr deal).
Are they glutted with 9-5 sedans being turned in? What's going on?
What should I try to demand? Extended warranty? An even lower price? (Kelly and Edmunds numbers are below) I am perfectly willing to bargain if I have to, I want the best deal, but I do want to buy the car.
Kelly:
Fair Private $16,015
Good Private $17410
Excellent Private $18440
Fair- $12,870
Good Trade In- $14425
Excellent Trade In- $15,300
Retail :$21690
