My 1999 9-5 had stinky oil cooking smoke problems for months as I knew the oil was dripping off the engine from somewhere and landing on the catalytic converter. I did the PCV fix and cylinder head retorque with no improvement. It wasn't until I removed the starter at the rear of the engine (against the firewall..) that I could see the oil coming from the oil pressure sending unit. Like other components, awkward to replace, but for the minimal part cost, it was a relief to finally be able to use the fresh air intake and not get asphyxiated!! I was afraid it was one of the engine gaskets and/or seals which might require engine removal.
If you use a 12 pt. socket (and flex joint and extensions...) to install the replacement sending unit (which is 6 pt. hexagonal) you can carefully thread the electrical lead along one of the unused socket splines between two in contact with the 6 pt. unit and tighten it up. Be careful not to pinch the lead and damage the insulation. I couldn't get an open end or box wrench in position to do the job.
Hopefully your problem is easily repaired. Whatever the solution, be sure to wipe off any accumulated oil and cooked greasy crud from the catalytic converter (when cool to the touch..!!) to shorten the length of time to burn off and the end of the stink!!
