At about 3:30 AM last Saturday morning My 01 wagon's alarm started to go off. Not as if it had been actually set, but just for short 2 second bursts - enough to wake me (and the neighbors) up wondering if I really just had heard my alarm, then doze back to sleep until it went off again for a few seconds.
I went out and everything looked ok. The alarm wasn't on (I rarely leave it on in my yard) so it was all the more confusing as to why it would be doing this. As I was standing there it went off a few more times - setting or resetting the alarm seemed to do nothing to impact the situation. I finally left the driver's side wide open to disable the alarm, and went back to sleep. The alarm didn't go off again.

Until about 3:00 the next morning, that is, the same thing happened, and I went outside and opened the door again, hoping to buy me enough time to sleep in. No such luck - I finally resorted to jacking up the car, removing the inner fender and then the alarm. That killed it.

Later in the AM opened the alarm up and measured the voltage at the batteries - it was about 6v - so they're probably OK. I disconnected the speakers from the alarm and reinstalled the alarm, so that when it went off it wouldn't make any noise.

I then took it to the nice folks at Village Saab in Acton, who checked the diagonstic system for messages and found none. They were (and are) stumped, but were hesitant to just start replacing parts on my out of warrantee car (80k mi) at my expense. I apreciate that, and I can live with the alarm as is for a little while as I collect more data as to what's going on.

Here are all the relevant data points I have so far. I'm not sure they are part of the root cause, but they could be:

- My dear 3 year old sone Elliott has recently taken to sitting in the livingroom with my key and watching the lights on my car blink on and off as he pressed the buttons on my saab key. But the key (and the spare) work fine.

- I recently had problems withthe rear left floor flooding. I fixed it by blowing compressed air into both the AC drains inder the driver seats. The problem is solved, but there was a lot of humidity in the car for a while.

-The rear locks no longer lock via either the inside switch or the keys. They work fine manually. They worked fine before this happened. Both frint locks work fine.

-Occasionally now the "Service Theft Alarm indicator come on the SID. If I clear it it may not come back on for a good day, or it might com eon the next time I start the car.

Those are the datapoints I have. I'm inclined to think it might be something in the Twice unit - perhaps the humidity caused it to fail? If so, does anyone have any tips on replacing it? It looks like the front seat has to come out - is that so? Has anyone had any success in troubleshooting/repairing these? I'm guessing that they cost several hundred dollars, and that used ones are in short supply...

I'll probably replace the batteries in the alarm, just for sport. But does anyone know what alarm system control logic is in the alarm part, and what is in the Twice unit?

Any other advice/suggestions?

Thanks,

Sam
