Yes, the V6 gets bad press, and I can't say that I haven't had a hand in that.
First off, most 'old tyme' Saabers don't like the V6 because (1) it's GM, and (2) it ain't the venerable Saab I4. Then again, I kinda like the two-strokers.
The issues that I know of with the V6 is primarily the timing belt. For folks used to timing chains that last well into the 150K+ (or more) range, 30K seems, well, short. Keeping up with the timing belt is critical, and the task of replacing it isn't trivial. I also believe that replacing the thermostat on the V6 isn't easy, and that's something that should be done every few years.
The 4-cylinder is pretty bulletproof, at least the bottom end.
So about the only valid knocks against the V6 are the need to stay on top of the timing belt, and that it doesn't have the same pedigree as the 4-cylinder. Now, the 4-banger in the 9-5 isn't quite the same as from the 900/9000, but it's similar.
Personally, I don't like the V6, but that's a personal bias, and has minimal basis in reality. Find a good car, stay after the timing belt, and the V6 should be fine.
Heck, I used to drive Fiats, and I'd do the timing belt every 20K. Of course, it took me all of 25 minutes to do it.
