Spongy pedal says to me air bubble. With the wheel off, look at the caliper and hose while your able assistant steps on the brake pedal. If you see the piston moving, good. If you see the caliper flexing or moving on the mount, or the hose looking strange, then that could be the soft pedal feel.
Otherwise, I'd assume it's a bleed problem. I'm assuming you're using the pump the pedal bleed method. Nice, but doesn't always work. Pressure bleeding is by far the best. If you can't borrow a pressure bleeder, consider bringing the car to a shop to have the fluid flushed. It's a good thing to do every 2 years, anyway. Should cost about $60. Or invest a little less than that in a pressure bleeder, either a store-bought one or a homebuilt (spare reservoir cap, garden sprayer, some fittings and a pressure gauge.)
