Sounds like you have air the system or you need a new Master Cylinder (unlikely).
You might need to bleed entire system (4 brakes). Especially if air entered reservoir (low fluid). Do it in this order:

Front right
Rear left

Front Left
Rear right

You can DIY by buying a bleeding valve (~$5-6). It's just a clear hose and one-way valve at one end. So the fluid/air leaves the system into the jar, but nothing gets back in.

Remember to refill the reservoir frequently (don't let the fluid goes below the LOW MARK).
