You are correct that the EPA test would get performed with the sport mode engaged, however, that test cycle is designed to simulate typical driving and does not include full throttle wide open (polyethylene to the polyester) hard core driving. I use sport exclusively in my 2002 Aero automatic, and get an average of 28.5 at this point, with 31-32 on steady highway driving the rule in summer, and about 1 less in winter( fuel blend).
I think that the main reason for sport mode is so they can have a "feature" to talk about. If it were not there as a separate function, it would make the car appear to not have someting, even though it might be a better product for many. For my money,I would take sport mode over all of the manumatic button operated automatics from Saab or anyone else. In the time it takes you to think about engaging the wheel mounted push buttons by moving the floor shifter t othe 4 position,I have already flexed my right ankle and have passed. As for manually upshifting,so far, with a planetary gearbox and torque converter, no one has shown me why the computer cannot do that better than me. When the fully electrohydraulic gearboxes get the reliability and smoothness that they need to replace both the conventional stick and auto,I predict you will see a mass changeover to them. Mileage of a stick, convenience of the auto, one tranny to build for the manufacturers!
