there's little enough oil that the car can't make pressure. If the sump was full and you told them the oil was down whatever # of qts that should have been enough for them to race the engine and go over the whole thing for leaks. An emissions test will tell them whether oil is being burned, and oil is easy to see in the coolant. The fuller it is, the more likely a leak will show, not the opposite. Are you being careful as you observe the dipstick ? -- it's very hard to see the oil on it (i think it's a crummy design), and it can look like an empty reading unless you get the light just right with clean oil. And finally, if you run the car on concrete for 15 minutes (like in a parking space or garage), race it some, then leave it overnight, and don't see any stain on the floor (do it when when the oil is topped up), it's not likely to be leaking. You'd better check the stick every 100 miles, and if you see a difference in a couple of hundred miles, go back and insist on a closer look. Once the oil gets low enough to turn on the oil light, you can wreck the engine pretty quick if you don't notice it.
