coolant bypass valve replacement

I searched and saw several posts on this subject but none talked about how to replace it. My valve is leaking, I have a new valve, and am going to replace it soon.
It is in a very difficult to reach spot - basically no access from underneath the car so I'm assuming I go in from the top of the engine compartment. I would appreciate any hints or tips from those of you who have done this before.
This is on a 1999 4 cylinder if that matters.
Thanks,
Richard
