The filter most definately _attenuates_ the alternater whine. On my system it brought it from a level that was so high, Onstar was difficult to use, down to a level that is audible only on smooth roads. It does not _eliminate_ the noise. But it should, in my case at least, greatly reduce the alternater noise.
I had mailed out a filter to someone from the BB a while back. I have not heard any response from him, so I assume it reduced the whine on his system as well. If not please post back.
I installed the filter on a 9-5 Aero and this is the basic procedure:
1) Remove the negative terminal of the battery. (MAKE SURE YOU DO THIS IF YOU DO NOT YOU ARE _BEGGING_ FOR A BIG PROBLEM)
2) Jack the pasenger side front of the vehicle up and slide under.
3) Remove the nut that secures the large positive lead to the alternater. (This is the biggest wire. Check with a voltmeter if you are unsure.) If you did not remove the negative terminal of the battery you will most likely have a big spark show and lots of potential damage when you put your metal (electrical condutor) tool on the positive terminal and bang or rub said tool onto any metal chassis or body component (vehicle ground) I can not emphasisze enough the imporance of first removing the negative terminal of the battery.
4) Test to see if the positive terminal of the filter fits over the positive lug of the alternater. If not, drill out the terminal hole to the appropriate size.
5) Remove one of the small bolts that secures the two halves of the alternater together. (It is a long thin bolt) Place the negative terminal of the capacitor through the bolt and replace and tighten the bolt. [DO NOT ATTACH THE NEGATIVE LEAD OF THE CAP TO ANY WIRES ON THE ALTERNATER. ATTACH IT DIRECTLY TO THE ALTERNATER CASE THROUGH THE BOLT. THERE IS A SMALL WIRE ON THE ALTERNATER THAT IS THE FIELD WIRE. IT IS NOT GROUND AND ATTACHING THE CAP TO THAT TERMINAL WILL BE A VERY BAD THING. ATTACH THE NEGATIVE TERMINAL OF THE CAP TO THE ALTERNATER CHASSIS GROUND THROUGH ONE OF THE BOLTS THAT SECURES ITS TWO HALVES TOGETHER]
6) Place the positive terminal of the filter on the positive lug of the alternater. Replace and tighten the nut.
7) Use a pull tie or two and secure the filter to the insulated portion of the positive lead wire coming off the alternater such that it does not rub/interfere with anything.
8) Replace the negative terminal of the battery and enjoy.
On a scale of 1-10 difficulty wise, this job is about a 2.5. Anyone can do it. All you are doing in attaching two wires and using a pull tie. The only hard part is knowing where to attach the wires... The space to work on the alternater is a bit cramped but nothing ridiculous.
