To me it is quality of materials. The 04 Passat (same interior as A4) I am driving has as good of an interior as the 9-5 or maybe even better. The dash pad is better, the roof lining is better, shifter is nicer and they use good quality leather. Everything just feels very solid and has no flimsy characteristics at all. Things like the 9-5's sun visor for example is just plain cheap - little details like that can go a long way in feel of quality. I think that makes a difference in people's opinion.
That said the 9-5 has much more comfortable seats and I like the dash instrumentation better in the 9-5. I also like the SID with radio info all in one. I would take a 9-5 over a Passat any day....but I like my low payment on the Passat.
