squirrels ate my Saab

...or some small rodent with a taste for wiring! This is further to an earlier post (86842) but is a new issue so I'm starting a thread. After replacing the ignition switch, my dealer (Midtown Saturn Saab Isuzu, Toronto) obtained my permission to see why the "check engine" light on my 2000 9-5 wagon (79500 km) was still illuminated. I couldn't believe what they found. The wiring harness in the engine compartment (below the brake master cylinder / vaccuum booster) had been chewed through and destroyed by a small animal. This time, I got my insurance agent involved and the car is now fixed up as good as new. All those "time for service" messages from my SID that I was ignoring (and couldn't clear) had been for real.
Damned urban squirrels! I live in downtown Toronto and the last thing I thought I had to worry about was my car being vandalized by four-legged creatures! Seriously, I'm half a block from Yonge & College... in a concrete canyon... not a woodsy glen!
How does one squirrel-proof a car that is used regularly? A tech at the dealer suggested a fresh coat of rustproofing. Any thoughts?
