I had one car in last Saturday with plenty of subtle knocking when driving and braking.
I greased the splines and all knocking went away instantly.
What I did was to actually disconnect the lower universal joint from the steering rack and pull apart the splined shaft as much as possible to apply grease.
I guess that if someone just smear some grease on the lower part without seperating it, it will not make a difference even for the day.
I asked the owner to let me know after driving for awhile and he said it was gone the whole day but came back on the second day but not as bad.
That, to me is an indication that the problems is actually in that splines joint.
Now it's just to figure out how to correct it.
That, I don't have an answer for.
