I'm having the same problem.
(01 2,3t Vector with 73000km (~50k miles))
I noticed the knocking as soon as I drove the car from the dealers on the testdrive one month ago. Had dealers check all suspension related parts for wear and got confirmation that all was OK/within acceptable values before I bought the car.
I do not aggre with SWEDECAR that the problem is linked to the steering column though, as the knocking disapears when gearbox is put in N when driving. Had the problem been linked to steering column, knocking would have continued when breaking, regardless of the gear was in D or N.
I suspect that it is the balljoints that are showing signs of wear, and am planning to have them inspected in the near future.
