Here's why. Although sloppy clutch work can lead to premature wear, chances are if the driver is sloppy with the clutch while downshifting, he or she is equally sloppy while upshifting as well as when starting from a dead stop, and that is where the clutch will get a lot more wear. Asfor your point about wear to axles , joints transmissions etc, think about it. When under power of acceleration, they all get a lot more wear and stress, since they must endure the torque force of the engine under power. While in a coast down mode, the amount of drag that is applied to these components in reverse directon is far less than what they endured under power. Most manual gearbox internals are designed to essentially last the life of the car if not abused. I have driven and owned about 33 cars with a clutch so far( although right now thankfulle free of that ugly chore) and never had to service a clutch, since the techniques used in downshifting were careful and I was not trying to emulate AJ Foyt or Mario Andretti in the process of shifting. ( all the newer racers use paddle shifted gearboxes now). I believe that you can effectively use downshifting and some engine braking as a way to save the brakes and that it does not have to induce more wear on the drivetrain. I have mostly my personal experience to vouch for this, but believe that scientifically I am correct as well. Others??? Comments??
