The service people at the dealership listened to it and quoted me at $6700 CAD (plus tax) for an engine rebuild. I felt a bit wary to sign under an aurally performed diagnosis, so I picked the car up and moved it to an old Saab independent. They are going to actually take it apart tomorrow to see what went wrong, and their worst case scenario estimate was still half the dealer's.
I'm now driving a rental PT Cruiser. Yuck! I don't mind that an indy does not offer loaners, but what really appaled me is that the biggest regional Saab dealer could not find a loaner for a client paying $7K out of his own pocket. The Cruiser really makes you appreciate everything the Saab had to offer ;).
And I'm starting to think about picking up a C900 turbo (or an SPG if I'm lucky) for track days and general tinkering...
