Hi Scott C,
As J mentioned, there's endless info on TSN regarding Saab's oil requirements. Most of the discussions are located here on the 9-5 BB, but a lot of "requirement" info was discussed about 1-1/2 yrs ago on the General BB (search for "saab oil" over there).
Basically, the ACEA A3 rating gives you the best protection in High Temperature/High Shear (HT/HS) conditions. At 100k+ rpms & 400+°F, this is EXACTLY what your turbo ALWAYS contends with!! Premium fully synthetic oils (like Mobil 1 & Amsoil) deal with these conditions best. If you're in a location where you need the cold-start flow of a 5W oil, then I'd suggest either M1 or Amsoil 5W-40.
Also, be aware that Saab's ACEA A1 5W-30 oil is a syn blend & not a full syn. (Their full syn is ACEA A5 0W-30; A5 is kinda between A1 & A3.) While the 5W-30 is great oil, I certainly wouldn't recommend it for longer than 3k-4k miles in any turbo Saab (& I wouldn't even use it in my own turbo Saab!). See if they'll let you pay the difference for a jug of 0W-30 full syn. That would be a good deal! It still won't meet the A3 recommendations in your manual, but at least it's a far superior oil to the A1 5W-30. If they won't, use it for shorter intervals in your 9-5, or use it in a non-turbo car for 5k-10k mile intervals.
