Actually you can get the opposite effect when the drive belt slips and the valve and pistons tangle. With my late lamented Alfa 164S, when this happened, the valves bent, which prevented them from closing fully. This eliminated all compression when you hit the starter so the engine turned over at a very high rate with turbine like smoothness. I don't know enough about how the Saab engine fails to know if they would do this too.
As to my two cents worth on the engine failure, we have had a lot of reports of the pulleys and/or tensioners failing. It could be that the belt was replaced faithfully at 60,000 miles but the other parts that should be replaced per Anders and others as preventative maintenance were not. If a pulley siezed, the toothed belt could/would jump a few notches, causing the valves and pistons to meet. With a very expensive engine job being the result.
