the balance shaft chaingear is junk. It looks like punk-jewelry and is very prone to problems in the earlier 2.3 engines. I think they've hardened the sprockets now and the 126K old ones I replaced in my '99 9-5 engine looked fine in retrospect. Overheat the engine once, though, and all bets are off as the guides are entirely made of plastic.
