Although the 9-5 did well in the geometry rating, it was average in the dynamic rating, thus it's average overall rating. Always looking for ways to improve automotive safety, Saab was involved in the creation of the biofidelic rear impact dummy which permits the new dynamic tests using a sled. I would therefore think Saab will analyse very closely the results of these tests as to understand why the 9-5 did not do as well as the 9-3 and 9-2x and act accordingly to remedy the situation, if they determine the seat is the problem. I hope there will be an official Saab response to these results, but in the meantime, I am convinced, and as others have pointed out, actual accident reports have proved it, that the 9-5 seats are amongst the best in the industry.
I find this quote from the report quite interesting: "Both Volvo and Saab have found a way to reduce the differential motion of an occupant's head and torso that causes neck injury in rear crashes. This is what we want every automaker to do."
As noted, the 2005 Impreza shares the same excellent results as the 9-2x. The Impreza is now equipped with the active head restrain mechanism, which is a tangible example that Subaru will also gain from the recent and future collaboration between these two unique car manufacturers.
