I have a 2003 9-5 wagon, and I use the roof bars all the time. I use them for a Thule roof box, and also for a Thule ski rack. The only time they make any noticable wind noise is when the cross-bars are attached. Otherwise, no difference in terms of noise from our 9-5 sedan without a roof rack. No noticable difference in mileage either when the cross-bars are not up. The utility of the bars is wonderful. I would not own a wagon without them. If you'll absolutely never use them, go without. If there is even a chance, then I would go ahead and get them.
