As pointed out earlier, it is an emmisions thing, and not specific to Saab, all newer cars do this. Luckily for me, with an automatic, I never notice it, one of the few benefits of the auto box I guess! Maybe Saab was a bit too agressive in its programming. You could try changing your driving style a bit so that you start backing off the throttle while still in gear but just to the point where the car is no longer accelerating, then depress the clutch and release the gas peddal and shift.
By the way, my '88 Nissan Pathfinder w/ 163000 miles just passed CT's new emmisions test! Even back then, the carburetor on this truck has vacuum lines & control systems that attempt to control the fuel input into the engine in order to reduce emmisions when the throttle plate is closed, and it actually kinda works, but still able to shift fine.
