The heat from a 5 watt 194 bulb can slightly deform or crack the plastic plate that the bulb holders screw into. The holder contacts are then not tight against foil. A whack on the dash will sometimes restore contact temporarily. To fix the problem, I peeled back the film and filled the dents in the plastic plate with jbweld and a popsicle stick. I used a bike mirror to see what I was doing through the speaker hole.

I also restored the copper printed circuit on the film with the stuff you use to paint on rear window defrosters when the "wire" gets scratched (not sure how effective this is or how long it will last). Then I took a Q-tip wetted with contact cleaner and stuck it into the bulb hole to clean off the green lens (again using the bike mirror to see). Finally I bought the proper 3 watt bulbs from the dealer. What a difference, I actually had to turn down the lights with the rheostat.

What gave me the clue was the warning I saw on the back of an old BMW instrument panel that said "Achtung! Do not use 5 watt bulbs!"
