it's possible that the timing is off, which could be the problem. Did you mark the distributor before you took it off? The most sure way to check advance without a timing light is to remove the distributor cap and then suck (hard) on the hose going to the advance mechanism. You should see the slotted rotor (not the rotor in the center) move. If it moves, assume that the advance is connected and working. Now, the only thing that can cause your problem is the timing. If you're off by even a millimeter, that could drastically affect performance (read: timing). Check it with a timing light as soon as possible, before you damage something...
