Jack,

It's hard to figure out sometimes but some CARS (not just Saabs) were not meant to be. Perhaps something about how it was put together at the factory, or how it was driven over its lifetime. Perhaps someone missed a few oil changes in a row and the timing chain broke. It happens, and the car is never the same again. On the other hand, sometimes a car is babied, and taken care of properly. I had an SPG until recently that all I did from August to February was change the oil! My brother has 250,000 miles on his 85 turbo. Check out the high mileage Saab list on this site. They will go forever.

Any car will need maintenance. While it sounds like you were doing the right thing, I almost get the impression that you were trying to get more performance out of a sick engine. That is breaking the cardinal rule of performance modification. The car must be in tip top mechanical shape before you try to squeeze more out of it. This applies to any car.

This issue you are having with the turbo sounds like either an install error or a defective part. Either way, it should be taken care of. Sounds like you are having bad luck with these cars in general. Sounds like you need a new mechanic. Where do you live now?

I, too, love Saabs. They are not cheap to own. Some cars, like Hondas or Toyotas, are easy to own. But they also suck big time for someone who enjoys cars. I can go on and on about the greatness of Saabs. Honestly, one of my favorite things about driving a Saab is the fact that it is NOT a Camry or an Accord, the ultimate middle class status symbol. Saabs are as unique and individual as their owners. I walk to work these days (I live 1 mi. away from my building) and I count Saabs along the way. My record is 10, but on no other day has it ever been higher than 7. If I counted Accords OR Camrys, the number would exceed 35, easily. Plus, they're all tan on tan. Woohoo. I like the fact that I only see a few of these around. They are just super cars, and everyone who owns them knows how wonderful ownership of a Saab can be. One recurring theme I hear is of people who sell their Saabs, only to be overcome with a driving desire to own a Saab again. Don't give up. Saabs are bliss. You will miss it when it is gone, if you get that far.

My 18 cents

Mike
