Help Please! Mechanic stumped

I have real sad story here: my daughter's 88 900T, auto has literally driven me crazy. She goes to school in Raleigh, NC and I have had to rely on the mechanic list posted in this bulletin board. Whom so ever recommended him must have had straight forward problems to solve:
As the story is too long and painful, I will just come to the point on the latest fiasco. The car was dying frequently and the problem was diagonised as fuel pump/system related. The pump seems to be ok: he changed the relays (probably not necessary) but the problem is still there. He is unsure of what to do: He says the car dies as the fuel pump gets hot. There is no power to the fuel pump. After the car cools off he is able to restart it again but it goes only two blocks before it dies.
Any suggestions/ideas will be most welcome. I am sure you guys probably want to know more but I am no car jock and me and the mechanic are not exactly very friendly these days.
Thanks
Sam
