I've had good luck using cloth patches and "Goop" adhesive. With the top open so that the inside of the slit is accessable, put Goop on the patch (I've cut several from old jeans) and stick it to the inside of the top, covering the slit. It's not a permanant solution, but a patch on a similar slit has held for over a year. Good Luck.
