Depending on how long it's been since the thermostat was changed, you may want to change that. They tend to get old and will sometimes jam shut or partially shut.

A more expensive possibility is that the radiator is partially blocked or some of the fins have corroded from the tubes. Take a look to see whether the fins are in good shape.

The other possibility is as tyjh mentioned: thermo fan switch. Check to see whether the fan comes on when it's hot.

For a horror story: Last month I was on I-81 southbound, driving a comfortable 70 through the PA mountains and the temperature was climbing up close to the red. I thought it was the extra effort of driving up the hills that was pushing the temp up. Just south of beautiful, downtown Frackville, it got just under the red. I decided to pull over. When I stopped the upper radiator hose burst. From the look of it, the hose had developed an anuerism had been spitting out a small stream of coolant. When I stopped the anuerism split. This was at 5 PM on a Saturday.

I was SOL but for 2 things: mobile phone in the car got me 911 and (the big luck-out) the ancient, grease-encrusted, 4-bay garage I was towed to had a hose that juuuussst fit.

You can bet that, for the rest of the trip, I kept a close eye on the temperature.

I changed all of the hoses the next week.

In any case, you need to get this taken care of and, to be safe, change the hoses. Overheating can cause you some expensive problems.
