Power Steering Pump Failing?

Had harmonic balancer and new belts done by a local indie for $400 a few weeks ago and everything was fine until last Friday. I'm getting a new noise that is audible in the car, coming from the passenger side firewall area. The noise is a low, deep "knocka-knocka" sound that oddly is not heard when under the hood due to valvetrain and exhaust noises.

My guess is that new belts put strain on original 160,000 mile PS pump bearings and they are starting to go. No other adverse symptoms, 200 mile weekend trip was uneventful, but noise is gradually increasing. It is audible at cold isle, "knocka-knocka" goes away with warm up, but a low grade hum is now occurring at speed, noise is engine rpm dependent, not road speed dependent (ie, clutch in coasting = no noise).

PS system groans (not sure if rack or pump) and uses some fluid during severe winter cold, has not been a problem with last mild winter.

Bently instructions to replace pump seem straitforward (is it?) , if its the pump (second guess is idle pulley)what should a pump cost from best source to do it myself and what should indie shop charge to buy part and install.

Car is a 92 900S 5sp. Its bee reliable but I'm in the zone where these repairs are adding up.
