Power window stuck down - Rain coming!

I loaned my car to my partner over weekend. This morning I discovered the window switch stuck in the down position. The window would not go up. I have had many Saabs with window switches that stick without causing a problem. There seemed to be a safety relay which would protect the motor. I did some initial testing by switching switches and found that it works on other windows. How do I check the motor? If it not the motor what else might it be. I do think the switch being stuck precipitated the problem. Any ideas - a storm is on the way?
