When I replaced my dash some weeks back (after having carefully pulled the wiring from all the knobs), after reassembly the <=> setting on the selector dial didn't work. Turned out the electric connector was hooked onto the wrong prong. One prong too far one way or the other. Same thing would happen if the connector had somehow become disconnected. Perhaps that's your situation. I do know that on my 82 900, that particular connector hooks onto either #1 or 2 of the lowest prongs.
Yes, I do have lights. There is a wire which connects to the rheostat on the left side of the dash that feeds the dash button lights. Perhaps that wire came loose.
