Well, I decided to start a DIY major service... I have some parts on order, but after reading this BB I ran out to the parts store over lunch and got a Bosch O2 sensor for my "early 90's mustang". It was a Bosch 13942, and the wires were about 4-6".

Before dinner I thought I'd flush my tranny fluid and take off the O2 sensor, then eat, then finish the job. So the 2nd batch of 10W30 dino in the tranny came out clean, so in with the Honda MTF. No problem. Thought I'd try the O2 sensor from underneath with a O2 sensor socket, but the socket wouldn't grab. Put on a bit of penetrating oil and tried with a wrench. No luck. No sense in getting angry, I put on more penetrating oil and went in for some yummy Chinese food.

Back to the car. after vice grips, wrenches, and a bunch of penetrating oil I thought I'd take out the battery and try from above. Maybe I could get more leverage. Nope. Now I'm getting testy, so I yank the 90 degree exhaust fitting onto which the O2 sensor is mounted. I get a 22mm wrench and a big @SS pipe to hold the exhaust piece. No luck.

This goes on for an hour. I bent teeth on vice grips, i hammered the sh*t out of the O2 sensor... Needless to say, the thing is totally stripped. I emptied a fresh can of penetrating oil into a bowl and let the whole thing soak for an hour while I soldered up the new sensor and relaxed in the house. BTW, I'd recommend a sensor with a longer pigtail. I'm worried that the electrical tape and heat shrink I used could melt with all the heat. Time will tell.

After an hour penetrating oil bath, I drilled, pounded, cursed, spat, and twisted. FINALLY it broke free. This had to be the most stubborn thing I've dealt with. Knock on wood.

Put the anti seize on the new part, torque according to Bentley, wipe up excess anti seize, and put the car back together. I cleaned up the tools, put the road tools back in the trunk, put a fire extinguisher, cell phone, and flashlight on the passenger seat, and got ready for the road test.

When I fired up the car it hunted a few seconds for idle, then smoothed out at 850 or 900 (slightly under 1000), where she likes to be. No check engine light, no need to pull the flash code button (or "boost button" as my wife tells her co-workers).

I saw a little smoke about a mile from the house and popped the hood. Looked and it appeared to be from the O2 sensor. I drove another mile and the smoke died down. By the time I got home, no smoke... Is it safe to assume I was burning off the anti seize compound that was not on the threads? I hope so!

I hope I didn't screw up the car because I planned a 600 mile trip this weekend, and a Cleveland to Toronto trip the following weekend. Any Toronto folks on here? I'll be there to see the Tribe wallop the Jays!
