Hi,
Two summers ago, I did a a/c conversion. I bought the kit from a PepBoys. I am not sure where you are. You can find the kit at any major auto parts store. I've even seen it at Walmart, believe it or not. The complete kit is around $40. You will need a new receiver dryer. Examine your hoses, around the fittings, for looseness. That is a common area for leaks. After I purchase the kit, I replace the fittings that comes inthe kit and changed the dryer. I then stopped by my mechanic who had the vacumn to suck out the system. That is recommend. You can go to any decent mechanic and have him just evacuate the system. He shouldn't charge you more then $60 to just do that. After that you, you can charge your own system. Just follow the directions. Importantly, in order for the system to accept the new freon, the compressor has to spin. The compressor will not spin if there is is freon. That is a safety mechanism. It is almost like a catch 22. You would bypass the system by bridging the line at the plug on the receiver dryer. You will hear the clutch kick in. Once the clutch kicks in, and the hose it attach to the back of the compression, it will begin to pull in freon. Hold the bridge for about twenty seconds. You will need about a can, I believe.
That is it in a nut shell. I hope this makes sense. That is what I did, and my car was cold for the last two summers. Good luck.

Btw, don't make the mistake others have done, by allowing themselves to be overcharge. I hear stories of people paying several hundreds to convert their system. If you find a honest mechanic, with the a/c guages, and you bring the kit to him, he should charge you no more then $150 to do the system for you, if you don't want to touch it.
