ignoring the idiots...you are obviously in a bit of a bind. Since it had to be towed to the dealer the dealer now has it and now their techs are trying to rip you off in whatever way possible, first by charging too much, second by underbidding the car. The fuel pump is a common but infrequent malady and there is also no guarantee that they are correct. Depending on the condition of the rest of the car a fuel pump can be a killer, esp if at the mercy of a dealer. however, other scenarios exist. Contrary to misinformed respondents the job can be tricky in that if you have never pulled a pump..they don't like to come out the first time and sometimes take a bit of force. the fuel line can also be problematic and if not careful can be broken. my suggestion is to locate a good used pump via one of the sponsors, goldwing is a good choice and then use the internet to find an independent mech to fix it and use the pump price as a negotiating tool or even ship it to them. another option is to find a saab buddy on the bbs who is willing to pick up a few extra bucks and help you out as well. Unfortunately none of the respondents so far seem to be of much use. perhaps post a q asking for a good saab indie mech in that area. If you have a mechanically inclined friend to accompany you it is true that with a few tools it can be replaced but it takes more than a screwdriver. however post first and get a good listing and procedure to take with. perhaps check out the townsend website faq. your car is not equipped with the pre-pump i believe. it could also even be the fuel filter which should be replaced as well. a friends pickup and tow dolly could fetch it for you but you still have the pump replacement issue.

anyway....non illigitum carborundum...

think outside the box. other solutions have to exist. do not be disheartened by those that post BS responses. Not that ALL have of course. just ignore the ones that are.
