First decide whether you need a snow tire, or an ice tire. The artic alpins and blizzaks are both ice tires (ever notice how the commercials are always filmed at ice rinks?). Unfortunetly, most snow tires sold today are actually more of an ice tire than a snow tire. Tires like the blizzak or alpins won't do you jack in snow, but are awesome on plowed roads that may have the occasional ice patch, or slush that refroze. The snow tire FAQ on TSN is a good start, altho somewhat dated. Pretty much the collective agrees that the Hakka snow tires are the way to go, altho you may have some difficulty in finding them.
