Well, when a transmission fails you can do one of two things... either
A. spend the 3K or less. or...
B. have an non functioning automobile that no one particuarly wants to try to get rid of.
I recently bit the big one and got my 5speed rebuilt, cost me about $3K even, mixed with some other things, and I felt a little ripped off. But I only bought the car a year ago, and I spent too much to drive it 6 months more and sell it for $300 or less. further I LOVE the car and wanted to be able to get in it and drive anywhere anyday I choose. Overall im satisfied with the car now, but do realize that to get a return on my investments ive gotta drive this car for 5-10 more years. as others pointed out, costs even out one way or another. With a new car your paying for it, with an old car your also paying for it but in a less predictable way. and automobiles are generally terrible investments anyway... So dont worry about the economics, decide if you want to keep it for a while or not and decide about the trans from there. A fluid change and adjustment could buy you some time to think about it.
