Help!!

I just picked up a nice '89 900 in great shape except the tranny is bad...

A couple of questions:

1. My trusted mechanic quoted me 11+ hours labor to R&R with a replacement box. Said the motor has to come out too...
a. Is the labor hours about right?
b. Can the box be pulled without taking the engine with it?
c. If anyone has done this who is willing to advise, some tips and suggestions, as I'm thinking of trying to do it myself. I've pulled gearboxes before...this just looks like a heavier, more complex job that I feel comfrotable with...

I REALLY like this car, and its rust free and everything else works and runs great, just not looking forward to spending more for a trans replacement than I paid for it.
