I haven't had to dismantle a saab transmission yet ('89 16v/na, 215kmi) so I'm talking in general terms, here...
The shift rod goes into the transmission, ending in a pin or hook of some sort. When you move the shiftlever side-to-side in neutral the shift rod twists, and this pin moves side-to-side to engage one of the shift forks. Then when you move the lever fore&aft, the shift rod pushes or pulls, which slides the shift fork fore/aft to engage a gear. One shift fork controls 1st & 2nd, next fork controls 3rd & 4th, etc...
The pin (or hooked end of the shift rod...) could be worn (or bent?) or maybe the part of the shift fork which receives that pin could be worn.
I think you can see some of that mechanism by taking off the side plate of the transmission (under the exhaust manifold).
So..... I guess that this stuff could be caused by problems inside the transmission, but its easier to check the external stuff first.
Finally, if the external linkage is sloppy, then when the transmission is in gear (any gear) then the shift lever would have some excessive side-to-side play. However, I don't have a good way to tell you exactly how much side-to-side play is acceptable.
BTW, I like Seven Springs better than anyplace I've gone skiing in Ohio. The best skiing in Ohio is in Pa or NY. Besides, we've gotten a lot of rain here lately, & I think they make a big pile of snow next to the parking lot, so they can measure it for their ski report. I go to Boston Mills & Brandywine because they're only 30 minutes from home.
