Two possiblities: the reverse lockout is out of adjustment/broken or the plastic shift gate is broken. The reverse lockout prevents the gearshift from going over to the reverse area of the gear pattern (unless the lockout collar is lifted). It also serves to define the gate for fifth gear. The plastic gate is often broken by ham-fisted valets.
Try this: pull up the rubber gear shift boot and pull it back. You should see three screws at the base of the shifter (may be torx on your '89). Remove those and the entire gearshift will come out. The reverse lockout is a spring-loaded pin at the base of the gearshift shaft that rides against a plastic gate at the bottom of the gearshift housing. You may have to clear some grease out to see if the plastic gate is broken. If it is, it will have to be replaced which involves pulling up the entire floor console. If the plastic is OK, then the pin may only need to be adjusted. This is done by removing the clip on the gearshift shaft and rotating the pin to make it longer.
Suggest you purchase a Bentley repair manual as it contains this info with illustrations and much more. A worthy investment for a worthy car. Good luck.
