That's my guess. Here's how it's supposed to work: the shifter has a pin at the bottom of the lever which, unless you pull up on the shifter's collar, you will not be able to shift to reverse. The shifter lockout pin is supposed to project 22mm (+/- 0.5 mm) from the end of the shifter's hollow lever rod. This can be measured after removing the shifter from the shifter housing, but I've had a problem trying to adjust it.

If you want to tear into it, you have to wiggle the shifter boot free, fold it upward--like an inside-out umbrella--to get it out of the way, make sure shifter is in neutral, and remove the 3 Torx head screws (either T20 or T25 size) pattern holding the shifter in the shift housing. Don't lose the screws, because 2 won't do the job!

Once you get the shifter out (a greasy mess, BTW), you'll see a cottter pin/clip near the bottom of the shifter. It holds the whole works together, the internal spring (attached to reverse lockout stud). A thin metal rod links the reverse collar near the shift knob to the lockout stud at the bottom. The Bentley manual calls for that 22mm specification above in the 1981-1988 8V manual, but I bet your's is the same (I've got a 16V Bentley on order).
