A couple of days ago GMcB posted a question asking about sources for a new R-134a-compatible compressor. He didn't get a reply, and I just know a few of you out there have ordered A/C parts.

After some troubleshooting, I've discovered that my A/C compressor clutch is shot. There's a procedure in my shop manual for replacing it, but of course, it involves removing the compressor, putting it in a vice, using a bunch of special Saab tools I don't have and would have to improvise, etc.

I considered attempting to replace the clutch with the compressor still connected, thus avoiding emptying and re-filling the system, but after staring at it for awhile, I decided this would be really foolish. (I had visions of dropping tiny little circlips and fasteners down into the nether regions of the engine while working there... been there/done that TOO many times! Plus there's working bent over the engine for hours on end -- a real pain in the back.)

The idea of tackling this job also doesn't appeal to me because I'd have to get someone to vaccuum out all the R-12 in the system, remove the compressor, fix the clutch, then reassemble everything and get someone to re-install R-12. I suppose I could find a shop which would take my freon, hold it, and then give it back to me for a nominal fee, but that would probably be frustrating and costly, if they'd even do it. As others have pointed out here, R-12 is expensive and you don't know the quality of the recycled R-12 you're getting anymore.

So I'm figuring, hey, it's time to switch to R-134a. If I just replace the entire compressor/clutch assembly, plus get a new filter/drier, I won't have to hassle with R-12 ever again. I might even get some money for the R-12 that's in there.

Question for you savvy Saabers: Where do you recommend I buy a new compressor and filter/drier? All my hoses are in good shape, so I think that's all I'll need.
