Someone's got to take the fall, it might as well be me. In my less diy'er phase, I wasn't about to spend $500 for a new CV Joint and Boot, as was recommended during my State Inspection at local Exxon. I endured the ridicule of the "Chief Mechanic" and had them take the car off the lift so I could "fix" it myself.

Tha factors weighing in my decision were the cost relative to the value of a 1984 4dr 900 with 185K miles on it. I figured I'd only keep it for a couple of more years (kept it for 3) and the quick boot would do the trick. It did. It was a little tricky to get the joint lined up and snapped together. Practice a few times before applying the vulcanizing bonding agent. Aside from that, scrape out as much of the old grease as you can, and repack with fresh grease, as best you can. The fit wasn't bad.

My final rationalization for using the EZ Boot, was, I knew what a bad CV Joint sounded/felt like, so I was quite certain I'd have plenty of warning to plan for it's replacement, and I didn't fear a catastrophic failure. My 75 year old neighbor now owns the car, and to the best of my knowledge, he's had no need to have that joint worked on. EZ Boot going strong after 7+ years, though I have too much self respect to use it on my '88 900TC.
